Shroud-Mounted Wind Indicator

Attached to the shrouds, these indicators are easily visible and easily adjustable. They provide real-time apparent wind direction information.

The “Wind-Thing” wind indicator is very sensitive and fully adjustable.

  • Balance adjustable
  • Pitch adjustable
  • Angle adjustable

A single finger can adjust the "Wind-Thing" angle. However, the indicator is well-balanced and it’s not necessary to adjust for angle due to the boat's heel.

The kit comes with two "Wind-Things", one for port and one for starboard shrouds. Each "Wind-Thing" weights 28 grams (1 oz) and fits shrouds up to 8mm.

Visibility and Accessibility

Shroud-mounted wind indicators are positioned at eye level, making them easily visible. This accessibility allows sailors to quickly and accurately gauge wind direction without diverting their attention from the course.

Installation

The installation of the "Wind-Thing" wind indicator is straightforward.

  1. First, check the balance by holding the "Wind-Thing" sideways. The wing should remain horizontal to the ground when positioned this way. If it does not, remove the colored nose cap and adjust by turning the screw, replace the cap, and check for correct balance again.

  2. Select an appropriate location on the shroud, ensuring it is at eye level and unobstructed.

  3. Attach the indicator by placing the shroud through the slot of the "Wind-Thing". Pull up on the top knob and rotate until securely in place. Push the top down to lock it.

  4. Adjust the pitch and angle and ensure it moves freely and accurately reflects wind direction.

  5. To remove, pull up on the top knob, rotate to align the slots of the "Wind-Thing", and then unfasten the top or lower support.
